EN The programme of the 5th International Conference Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art extended over five days, from 28 October to 1 November 2014. Sessions were held at the State Hermitage Museum and Saint Petersburg State University, while the final day was devoted to field seminars.
28 October — opening day
The conference opened in the Hermitage Theatre with the plenary session “Classical Antiquity — Life through the Ages, and the Age of Topicality”. The evening programme, “Flickers of Classical Antiquity in St Petersburg”, connected the academic theme with the city's architecture and monuments.
29 October
Sessions at the State Hermitage Museum, the Bobrinsky Palace, and the Twelve Colleges addressed classical antiquity and the world around Hellas, Russian art of the eighteenth century, Russian art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the legacy of antiquity in the European Middle Ages. Poster presentations and study visits to the Hermitage's Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Centre formed part of the day.
30 October
Meetings at SPbU examined the classical heritage in the Byzantine oikumene, ancient art in the Renaissance, the fate of the classical tradition in Western European art from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, and its interpretation in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art.
31 October — sessions and panel discussions
“Harmony of the Classics under the Arches of Old Rus'” met in SPbU's Petrovsky Hall. At the State Hermitage Museum, panel discussions considered fine art and architecture within and beyond the classical heritage and the presence of contemporary art in the historical museum. The programme concluded there with thematic gallery visits and closing remarks.
1 November — field seminars
The final day offered study visits to the Pavlovsk and Tsarskoye Selo state museums, alongside a separate seminar on medieval art in Veliky Novgorod.
