Conference 2026

The 12th International Academic Conference Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art will take place in Moscow on 13–16 October 2026. It is organised by Lomonosov Moscow State University and Saint Petersburg State University, with the State Hermitage Museum as the conference’s permanent partner.

Applications are closed. Selection results are expected on 30 August, the session schedule on 14 September, and the detailed programme on 1 October 2026.

Scope

The conference brings together scholars working on art and architecture, cultural heritage, and museum practice. Art historians, cultural researchers, archaeologists, conservators, museum professionals, and researchers in related humanities disciplines are welcome. Papers may address periods from antiquity to the present day.

The organisers seek to encourage substantial exchange between scholars of different generations and academic traditions. Particular value is placed on research that offers new findings and considers artistic phenomena within a broad historical and interdisciplinary context.

• art of the ancient world;
• Byzantine art, the medieval Balkans, and the Christian East;
• medieval European art;
• medieval Russian art;
• Renaissance art;
• early modern and modern European art;
• Russian art of the 18th and 19th centuries;
• 20th-century and contemporary art;
• Asian art;
• art theory;
• interdisciplinary approaches to cultural heritage.

After the conference

A selection of articles based on conference papers is planned for the 2027 and 2028 volumes of Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art. Submission and selection arrangements will be communicated to participants separately.
