Conference 2010

The 1st International Conference of Young Specialists Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art was held in St Petersburg on 1–5 December 2010. It was organized at the Faculty of History of Saint Petersburg State University on the initiative of its Department of Russian Art History, in collaboration with the art history department of the Faculty of History of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The conference inaugurated a joint project between the two universities' art history schools. Its academic programme brought together early-career researchers from Russia and other countries, with papers ranging from antiquity to contemporary art.

Academic programme

The plenary meeting and thematic sessions addressed the medieval art of the Eastern Christian world, medieval Russia, Russian art from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, Eastern and Western art from antiquity to the modern period, and questions of archaeology, conservation, art theory, and methodology.

The sessions were complemented by a student photography exhibition, presentations of creative projects, a city tour, and a study visit to Veliky Novgorod. The conference concluded with a cultural programme in St Petersburg.

Emblem and publication

The emblem of the first conference featured Oleg Liagatchev-Helgi's painting Soleil (2010, acrylic on canvas, 130 × 97 cm; private collection, Paris).

Papers from the conference were published in Volume 1 (2011) of Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art.
