Conference 2012

The 3rd International Conference of Young Specialists Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art was held in St Petersburg from 31 October to 4 November 2012. The event continued the collaboration between Saint Petersburg State University and Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The conference brought together 147 speakers from nine countries. Russian participants represented 39 institutions in nine cities, while international contributors came from 13 universities. The principal sessions were held at SPbU and the State Hermitage Museum.

Academic programme

Seven sections addressed the art of the ancient world, Eastern Christian and medieval Russian art, Western European art of the medieval and modern periods, Russian art from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, twentieth-century Russian and Western art, and questions of art theory and cultural studies.

The opening and plenary session were streamed online and connected by video link with academic centres in Moscow, Ekaterinburg, and Belgrade. The programme also included the photography exhibition The Caucasus: A Path of Memories, museum-based seminars, and study visits to Veliky Novgorod, Pavlovsk, and Tsarskoye Selo.

Emblem and publication

The conference emblem featured Vik's (Vyacheslav Zabelin's) 2003 work Escape to St Petersburg, from a private collection in St Petersburg.

Papers from the conference were published in Volume 3 (2013) of Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art.
